They did what "they" said couldn't be done. Underdogs though they may have been, Severna Park stood tall for their Homecoming to packed stands and deafening cheers. The excitement was definitely in the air-  and you could feel it as the team left the newly constructed Falcon field house for the first time and took the field against the favored and feared Patriots. An opening kickoff fumble by Severna Park gave the Patriots the ball on the 9 yard line. What could have been momentum soon turned to frustration for Old Mill as the mighty Falcon defense took over and the Patriots ended up with only a field goal and a 3-0 lead. Park Offense took over with a 9 play, 79 yard drive that ended with an impressive 19 yd. TD pass from Greg Zingler to Chris Hunt, followed up with an extra point kick by Steve Pecevich. The next Patriot drive ended abruptly with a Callahan fumble, which Joey Greco recovered in style to end the first quarter. Second quarter opened with another big offensive drive while the Falcons again took control of the clock, moving the ball 62 yards in 13 plays. Tom Babington had a nice gain, followed up with a Brent Sanders 9 yard TD run to the end zone. Gaining the 18 yards he needed to break the county record for rushing yards in the second quarter, OM's Ryan Callahan capitalized on a 3rd quarter Falcon fumble and then an interception and scored back to back 18 yard TD's giving the Patriots their only lead of the game at 17-14. That was all the motivation Severna Park needed, as they answered back with an 88 yard, 12 play drive which ate up the rest of the 3rd quarter, and put them on the 9 yard line for a 4th quarter opener.  Tom Massie (24 carries and 97 yards for the game) racked up 6 carries and another TD run to end the drive, putting the Falcons ahead yet again, 21-17. (And the crowd goes wild!)  The final score of the gave came after Mark Otto forced a QB fumble deep in Patriot territory, which was recovered by Chase Kettler and promptly run in the end zone for 13 yards by "Magic" Marques Johnson. The entire Falcon defense deserves kudos for their performance, as they proved that Callahan can be contained. They held him to just 109 yards on 21 carries- 40 yards less than his usual game average. O-Line deserves a lotta love as well... the Falcons had 7 of 12 third down conversions and a 4th down conversion, keeping Patriot offense off the field and out of striking distance for most of the game. The entire Severna Park team rushed the stands, and were lifting their helmets to honor to the Homecoming crowd. They need to keep the spirit alive- Next week they are at home again to take on the undefeated Annapolis Panthers. This will be one game you don't want to miss as both teams have a lot on the line. See you at the game!
