In Game 10, the Falcons had everything to prove and nothing to lose. Severna Park traveled to Bruin territory, to try to stop Broadneck from becoming the 2nd team ever in county history to have back to back undefeated seasons. The Bruins were riding high on a 28 game win streak and had defeated the Falcons since '99, not having allowed an offensive TD since then! All of that was left on the field of Lawrence E. Knight stadium tonight as Severna Park brought it all crashing down with a surprise upset. This was the most exciting game the Falcons played all year... and the stadium roared with all the ups and downs that this rollercoaster ride of a game. You might not have recognized the Falcon line up either, Zingler was out with a broken hand, Ferris stepped in as QB, freshman Ryan Clark stepped in as running back for his first time on the varsity team. Clark opened up the scoring for the Falcons early in the first quarter, with a 2 yd. TD run followed by a 27 yd. TD pass from Ferris to Ben Hunt which put Park ahead 12-0 going in to the second quarter. With an incredible defensive performance the entire D-Line was flying to the ball and keeping the Bruins frustrated, scoring 7 sacks against the Bruins from Metzger, Barron, Sells, Hackmann, Ferris, and Otto. John-O Hartman kicked 2 mid-game FG's keeping the Falcons neck and neck with the Bruins going into the 4th Quarter. A Hartman fumble on the Park 49 yard line led to a Bruin score and put Broadneck in a sweet spot to win it all. Down 27-26, Severna Park took over on their own 20 yard line with 90 seconds left and no timeouts. The set of plays that followed was certainly the stuff the "Friday Night Lights" are made of : a 20 yard pass on 4th and 19, a 10 yard pass on 3rd and 9, and a 15 yd. roughing penalty on the Bruins put Hartman back in the hot seat with 5 seconds remaining on the 32 yard line. You could have heard a pin drop as John-O kicked off, it barely floated over the left hand corner and scored the game for the Falcons! The crowd stormed the field in celebration and many of the coaches said it was the best win in their entire career. Severna Park earned a spot in the 3A regional playoffs, and Broadneck suffered a chink in their armor as they still remain the top-seeded 4A team going into round 1.
Falcons face off against Charles' County's Westlake Wolverines next Saturday, November 13th @ 7:00 pm.
Good Luck!
